1-3 March 2019 The Singer as Artist

JACKDAWS, Somerset

I am delighted to have been invited to give a weekend course for the first time at Jackdaws in March.  I chose the title The Singer as Artist because I am so interested in colour and imagination in singing.  I will work with 10 singers over three days to help them to use imagination and a holistic approach to technique and interpretation.

THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL>  Check the Jackdaws website in case of any cancellations

23-28 April 2019 at the beautiful Le Mas d’Arjac in the Aveyron region of France.  Take a look at the website for Arjac to see how beautiful it is.  More details on there too about the course.

Following a similar format to the Jackdaws course described above, a maximum of 10 places are available.  This course is aimed at advanced students and professional singers.  Repertoire is free choice but should be memorised.

I am delighted that Nigel Foster has agreed to come and play the piano for us.

Transfers from Toulouse airport will be provided for flights arriving in  on the Tuesday morning 23rd, and back to Toulouse on the evening of the 28th to catch late evening flights back to London.

Full board accommodation with delicious food will be provided and there will be trips out to local villages and the delightful scenery of the Aveyron.

Two informal concerts will be given at the end of the week.

The total cost for the week is £690 excluding flights

Please contact me through this website if you would like a booking form, or for more information.

Masterclasses and Workshops

St Barnabas Church Bethnal Green November 2016

Saturday June 20th 2015 10.00-18.00                                                                                                                                                                                                  St Barnabas Church, Roman Road, London, E3 5TG

Renowned director and acting teacher Norman Cooley and I collaborated on a workshop for singers to prepare arias for audition.  Norman worked on the story and the drama and the visual elements of the performance, and I worked on the singing, music, and exploring the score to reveal the composer’s intentions. There were 9 singers and one observer.  Feedback from the student was universally positive with particular attention drawn to the way we collaborated, and the amount of detail we were able to go into.  Here is a nice shot of Norman and me.

Saturday 28th February 2015 14.00-17.00 & 18.00-21.00
St Barnabas, Bow, London E3 5TG, United Kingdom

I gave two masterclasses from 2-5 and 6-9 in St Barnabas Church. The places quickly filled up with a mixture of my own private students and some students with whom I had worked on other courses, and a couple who were unknown to me beforehand. We had people to sing to all day and the church warden put on some lovely refreshments for us between the two sessions. It was an exhilarating day for me, and I had great feedback from people.  AND we raised £400 towards the church’s restoration fund.

Sunday 12th April 2015 14.00-17.00                                                                                                                                                                                                       St Barnabas Church, Bow, London, E3 5TG

I held a group class for seven of my private students.  At Trinity Laban, I do a fair amount of group teaching – indeed it is part of our syllabus.  I have always found it very valuable for students to listen to each other, to support each other, and to learn from each other.  Some of my TL students who then stay with me after graduation have told me they miss the feedback from each other.  So I hope to hold more of these group sessions for private students.  There was a range of students in this group – some already working, and some who do not have aspirations to be professional singers but want to do the best they can in their own sphere of activity.  We all enjoyed the afternoon and worked hard on presentation and on technical issues that are common to most singers.

Saturday 2nd May 2015 10.00-15.00
Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris, Paris, France

This May, I was be in Paris to give a public masterclass for singers. The event was organised by Flore Philis, with help from Marie Menand.  Eight singers presented some wonderful repertoire and received 30 mins coaching each.  I managed to do most of the speaking in french, which was quite hard, but I felt as I was in Paris I should do that!  We had an audience which included friends, parents and other singers, including my sister Jan, who had travelled from the southwest of France, where she lives, to support me.
